Wildlife in the Qatar desert

The desert looks empty, but animals live here. Most of them hide from the heat, so you are more likely to see their tracks than the animals.

Arabian oryx

The Arabian oryx is the national animal of Qatar. This white antelope with long, straight horns once died out in the wild and was brought back by breeding programmes. Today, oryx are kept in protected reserves, so do not expect to see one on a safari.

Gazelles, foxes and hedgehogs

Sand gazelles, red foxes and desert hedgehogs live in Qatar. They are shy and many come out mostly at night.

Lizards and insects

Look for small tracks across the ripples in the morning, before the wind clears them. Lizards and beetles leave many of these marks.

Please leave them alone

Do not chase or feed any animal, and take your rubbish back with you. The camels you ride are the ones you can get close to, with your guide beside you.
