Life in the desert
The Bedouin moved with the seasons, with camels and goats, and lived in tents woven from animal hair. Knowing where to find water and how to read the desert kept a family alive.
Hospitality
A guest is offered Arabic coffee, known as gahwa, with dates. It is served in small cups, and gently shaking your cup shows that you have had enough.
Camels and falcons
Camels gave transport, milk and wool, and they are still loved in Qatar today. You can see camel racing at Al Shahaniya. Falconry began as a way of hunting for food and is now a proud sport. There is a falcon market at Souq Waqif in Doha.
Weaving
Sadu is the traditional Bedouin weaving, with geometric patterns in strong colours, used for tents and cushions.
In the desert today
Our overnight safari includes a night in a Bedouin-style tent, and you can also ride a camel on every safari.
